Meet physicians, mathematicians and statisticians, part 2

March 20, 2021
Lecture Hall 5F, Cosmology Building, NTU

Organizers:
Yu-Lun Lo (Chang Gung Memorial Hospital& Chang Gung University)
Hau-Tieng Wu (Duke University)

Aim & Scope:
Motivated by the success of the previous meeting on 2020, August 1st, we will again gather physicians and mathematicians/statisticians that have common interest in biomedical signal processing in this event. Four speakers will give briefs talks focusing on two specific topics to introduce physicians why math is important and how math can help, and to let mathematicians/statisticians know new opportunities from modern clinical practice and in general, medicine.

Invited Speakers:
Yu-Chen Huang (CGMH Linkou): medicine -> applied math
Yu-Ting Lin (VGHTPE): medicine -> applied math
Gi-Ren Liu (NCKU): math -> medicine
Tzu-Chi Lu (NTHU): EE -> medicine
Hau-Tieng Wu (Duke University): medicine <-> applied math

Agenda:
09:00am – 09:50am/ registration + mixed-up + introduction + coffee + snack
09:50am – 10:40am/ first talk (2 speakers on one topic)
10:40am – 11:40am/ gathering together, discussion, and mixup
11:40am – 12:30pm/ second talk (2 speakers on one topic)
12:30pm – 01:30pm/ small lunch, gathering together, discussion, and mixup

Summary statistics of Participants: 12 physicians, 12 mathematicians/statisticians & 16 future hopes (aka students, from medicine, math, EE, etc)

Main activities: Motivated by the success of the previous meeting on 2020, August 1st, on March 20, 2021 we again gathered physicians and mathematicians/statisticians that have common interest in biomedical signal processing for an interdisciplinary discussion. The plan was to have four speakers to give brief talks focusing on two specific topics to introduce physicians why math is important and how math can help, and to let mathematicians/statisticians know new opportunities from modern clinical practice and in general, medicine. The activity attracted 12 physicians, 12 mathematicians/statisticians & 16 students, from medicine, math, EE, etc. Four talks focusing on biomedical signal processing were given by two physicians (Dr. Yu-Ting Lin from VGHTPE and Dr. Yu-Chen Huang from CGMH, Linkou), one engineer (Dr. Tzu-Chi Liu from NTHU) and one applied mathematician (Professor Gi-Ren Liu from NCKU) with interdisciplinary background. Topics range from:

(1) the arterial blood pressure analysis by modern manifold learning for the outcome evaluation of liver transplant operation,

(2) the otoacoustic emission (OAE) signal analysis by random matrix theory for the practical application of OAE to telemedicine,

(3) the respiratory signal analysis by nonlinear type time-frequency analysis for the exacerbation evaluation of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,

(4) and the development of an intelligent system for automatic sleep stage analysis and its application for the hospital quality control problem.

The mingle activities before, between and after the talks were very active. We would expect several initiations of new interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers in the near future.
